Remote Controllable DVD burner

remember

Im thinking of building a computer system that can record and play DVD's(perhaps a HD BluRay) directly to and from the TV.

Now, I realized, Im going to need a remote, so I dont have to get up and down to press the play or record button everytime Im want to watch something.

I really hope that this can be done(& cost efficiently) If so, please let me know. Please keep in mind, I would like to often be able to watch one channel and record another- and if possible record 2 channels while watching another.

Please let me know what I need to do. I hope this is not too expensive.

I don't believe anything equipped to do exactly what you want exists... and how much money are you talking about? Blu-Ray burners are several hundred dollars.

Its just the concept

The idea of using a BluRay burner is just an option. I know they are a rip off, but I just wanted to add the idea of using it just in case the price drops significantly within the next few months or at least at some time during the next few years while Im still using this same computer(that is yet to be built)

But at the very least I want to be able to install and use just a regular DVD burner for what I mentioned before; Directly playing DVD's from the computer to the TV, (which will also be my Computer screen) and of course, most importantly, . . . being able to record whatever program on TV I want at the press of a button(so I dont have to get up out of bed, everytime I want to record, stop, play, etc)

I just got the idea from looking at some media cases, shown with remotes, but I have no idea which ones are capable of doing what I want, or how to determine which are capable of doing what I want.

There is one that costs $139, shown with remote and another for $500. I can Not afford the more expensive one, but I dont know how to determine which ones can do what I want. Please tell me how to decide if you know. The one for $500 actually looks like a a full blown stereo amplifier is built in, but for the cost I cant afford it. I just want to be able to do my basic play, stop, recording, etc. directly to the DVD burner built into the computer case which is to be connected to the TV/monitor, and of course still be able to use the computer for web browsing etc. when Im not watching TV. Please dont tell me its not possible. Im really dreaming about doing this. I want it so bad.

I can spend about $1,000(not including the monitor/TV) on all the parts-CPU, MB,RAM, PSU etc. Possibly a few hundred more, but let me know what you think.

well instead of goin taking the cable signal straight to you dvd burner. you can use a tv turner card and just copy what ever you want into jpeg format then burn it to a dvd/cd later. i know you can use media center along with a tv turner as your software for the tv turner. and i know that media center can be controled with a remote so in theory you should be able to play around with it and figure out if you can just leave media center set on the "burn setting page " and maybe use the remote to start the burning.

P.S. this is all assumtions, i havnt actually done anything like this, but from what i do know, i think it should work.

also this is a tv turner i was talking about, i know much about them so this is just a example but i know that on certian ones u CAN burn one channal and watch another...

if i were you id just search around some more for some tutorials and such. Good Luck

you're still gonna have to get up and go there to put a new disc in for recording or when it is done :)

Besides the Tuner Card, What do I need?

To Charmpeddler:

I dont understand. How can I "take the cable signal straight to you dvd burner"?
First of all, I have Satellite TV. So I assume and please correctly if Im wrong. .
1) The satellite LNB cable goes as it normally does to the satellite receiver stb(set top box)
2) Then another coax cable has to go from the stb to the computer?, specifically the tuner card?(Please correctly if Im wrong)
and finally,
3) A cable going from the computer(or perhaps, more specifically, the tuner card) to my TV or even projector.

Is that correct?
Second, I thought that JPEG was only for still pictures, not for motion pictures. Nevertheless, I cant understand this statement. .

"you can use a tv turner card and just copy what ever you want into jpeg format then burn it to a dvd/cd later."

What?

I was thinking of using my hardrive to directly record whatever I wanted from TV, so that way, I dont have to change the CD every 2 hours and then I can just copy and save the movies, programs, etc. that I really want to save on to the CD and then clear up my Hard Drive for more general recording later.

Do you get what Im trying to say? I want to use the hard drive on my computer to record directly from TV. For example lets say there are a 12 Biographies(on the Biography channel) that go on from 12a.m. to 12p.m. But at the end I only want to record and save 10 hours of them. To record 10 hours, let alone 12 hours(with 2 hours in the middle not wanted) I will have to change the CD, somewhere after about 6 hours of recording. But if I record directly on to my hardrive, then I dont have to change CD's half way through and I later I can save the shows I really want by copying them from the hard drive on to 2 or 3 CD's and then erasing the hardrive for more recording later.

This is what I want. Of course, this is all just in my mind, and I would be heartbroken to hear that it is not possible. But I think it is, I just need to understand how and why exactly do some computer cases come with a remote control? I imagine that it is for doing what I want to do and if not then at least for audio purposes and if the remote control is meant for audio recording, then surely there must also be a similar system capable of video recording and basically doing what I want to do.

So please, anyone give me some insights and clues and specifics of what kind of computer case, and other components I will need(besides TV tuner card) so that I can do this. Thanks for anybodys' help.

sry man, i was in ahurry at work and didnt do a very good job of explaining my self... let me try again. FYI i also have satellite tv.

and also, i thought u ment that you wanted to bypass your harddrive and burn straight to a dvd. so now that i know i was wrong it makes it a lil more easy.

1. yes there is a cable goin from your satellite reciever dish ( prolly on top of your house?)
2. yes there will need to be another coax cable goin from your satellite receiver to the "tv tuner card" wich will instlall in the back of your computer. OR i believe that if you get the right kind of tv tuner card it will have an "input" and a seperate "out put". so you could have one coax cable goin from satellite reciever to the computer card and then from the computer card to the tv. kind of like an "inline" thing.

the tv tuner card will record to your hard drive in the format of MPEG-2, from there you will be able to take that file and burn it to a dvd or a regular cd. and you can do that whenever it is convenient for you :D.

so ya all of the stuff you record will be saved on your hard drive. and each time you press start then stop, a new file will be created. so if you press record and save 12 hours of stuff you will have one BIG file. i would suggest finding a good program for yourself. i have no first hand knowledge of them. SRY :(

hope this helps more, like i said was in a hurry and didnt want my boss to see me useing the net at work for forums stuff :O
