Remote Desktop - VNC, MSN Live Messenger

I live in Europe and my family lives in the U.S. For the last couple of years, we have used Live Messenger's remote desktop capabilities so that I can help fix whatever pc problems my family has. They recently switched to Verizon Fios and ever since then, I cannot connect to their desktop. I am assuming it has to do with ports not being open in their new router.

Now, my questions:
  1. Anyone know how to change their router so I can connect to them?
  2. If I use VNC instead of Live Messenger, will I still have the same problem connecting?
  3. If I use the free version of VNC, does my family need to have VNC installed also, or can it be done through the Java viewer of VNC?
Thanks for any input.

port 3389 needs to be open for remote desktop and vnc again 5900 or 5800. Not sure if you need to have it installed on the host machine, you do for 5900 but not sure about 5800

Thanks, I'll check into that next time I talk to them. Hopefully I can walk them through it over the phone. It might be a bit tricky, since I don't know what their router interface looks like.
Thanks again. BTW, I just responded to your other post about remote screen - and sorry, but you might see that I'm a bit confused on what you are trying to do. Maybe it's just too late and I need to hit the sack.
