Remote Desktop

I'm wondering what can remote desktop do? I have read tonnes of forums and I have some idea what it can do but I still don't have the full picture. Could someone sum it all up for me? Like all the functions, pros and cons.

Thanks

Remote desktop simply allows you to control & manage another pc over the internet or local Lan, behind your very work desk

But in what way? like can you control the mouse movements? And close windows? If there is a person on the computer at the time can he still use the mouse and keyboard... or is the mouse and keyboard disabled while I am using remote desktop on the computer?

Yes control mouse movements and type using your won keyboard, so the person on the other end can see notepad opening and text being entered automatically, but both cannot use the pc as far as i know.If i remote into your PC right now probably it will log you out (as far as i know i may be wrong on this part), so if you re-log in, it will log me out.
i don't think both can use the pc at the same time.
i may be wrong as i don't use remote desktop often

Bugger, do you know of any apps\programs that would allow this? It kinda needs to be over the internet aswell.

RealVNC is one that is commonly used to monitor school/business computers, but I believe it is rather pricey.

Yup. Basically, you have to be connected to a network (which is possible over an internet connection, you don't have to be directly connected). Both computers have the have the program install, and you enter the computer's network name into a box, and a window pops up showing exactly what is showing on their monitor. You can do anything that they would be able to do with a mouse and keyboard.

I've had a bit of experience with it... which directly relates to my high school giving me 10 days off during my Senior year.

Legand! Haha I'm hopin to catch my friends brothers, and my friend but I don't know how I am going to install the software without them knowing Time to Start up super stealthy skills!

use logmein.com, it is a nice program, and I believe it is still free.

They'll need to be on the same network.

Nope, you can do Remote destop over the internet, you just need to it up across the router, and have IIS and everything.

I like logmein... but since it goes over the internet, it is slow (even with fast connections). I'd like to set up a 10/100/1000 router and use it for remote access.

Alright quick question... Whats the most effective program to access another persons over the internet? Also what program requires the least setting up? e.g. IIS, and whatnot

gotomypc is easy, and it has a trial you can use. However, the person whos computer you are accessing has to let you install it on their PC too.

RDP (remote desktop protocol) is a great feature built into WinXP. I'd suggest using this. There are a few conditions to make it work. First the computer you are connecting to must have it enabled (Right click 'My Computer' go to properties > remote tab > check the box that says 'Allow computers to remotely connect to my computer'). Second, the person you are connecting to must have a password protected account on their computer. If there is a firewall make sure that the remote desktop is an exception. As in the case of the built in Windows firewall, theres a check box right int he exceptions tab to allow it. Now, when you connect the person's screen will get locked out, meaning they cannot see what you are doing. It's like locking your computer (Ctrl + Alt + Del - Lock Computer) - so all they see is a logon type screen. They cannot see what you are doing like I said, but you have complete access to everything on the machine, so long as there is an internet connection (which means if you restart the PC remotely you will lose connection). Now, RDP has some cool features, you can access shared files and printers, you can access their drives as well as yours (which is great for file transferring... yes you can transfer files from one PC to another remotely using RDP) and you can have access to their serial ports. There are other various settings that make your remote experience easier. I mean after all, you're connected via the internet so lag can be experiences, which is why they have a feature to turn down the settings, so you don't see themes, animations, images, etc. to make the connection quicker. It's easy to access too. Just go to Start > Run and type 'mstsc' and hit enter. It opens a dialog that asks for the computer you connect to (if you are on a network you can just type the name of the machine, or by IP). Make sure you have the right IP, and it's not a masked IP by a firewall or else you won't be able to connect.

There a little overview of the remote desktop feature built into WinXP
