The effective way to remove AVG when the uninstaller fails is the manual removal of the registry values after shutting the AVG control center down. This can be easily with a free registry cleaner better suited then CCleaner. That mainly removes IE histories and temp folders leftover by software installers. RegCleaner can be found at http://www.dewassoc.com/support/useful/regcleaner.htm

As you will see below once you right click on the icon found in the system tray to close the AVG control center down and even look in the taskmanager to make sure all Grisoft AVG processes have stopped. You can even disable AVG in the services and startup group in the msconfig utility abd restart the system if you are concerned about any part still being active. Once the keys are removed by checking off the box next to the two items as seen in the image you simply click the remove button on the bottom right corner next to the exit button. Then you easily remove the folders.

That's a great tool there. I ran across that one several years ago with a 98 machine and still use it on Vista. Keep the link there as a reference. Several have had problems removing AVG when the uninstaller fails unfortunately. Other programs like Trend Micro's PC-cillin will automatically remove other programs for you when it installs but apparently not Avast.

If you look up to the very top left and open "tools" you will also see "registry cleanup". Clicking on that will open a dropdown menu to the right for the automatic cleaner there. I simply use the "do them all" option for letting it locate and remove anything left in the registry by uninstallers.
