repairing a video card? possible?

well as some of you may have read, i managed to bust my own card the other day while installing a new cooler on it.

I started looking it over and noticed that one of the little capacitor "thingies" way very loose compared to the others and had actually come loose from its connection....im thinking this happened when i was removing the stock cooler.

I had a friend solder the connection back together, but the capacitor is still much looser than the others of the same type.

Do you think theres any way this could be repaired? Or is the card simply DOA.

along those same lines, ive been out of the PC loop for a bit, so whats probably the best bang for the buck card in the 150-200 dollar range?

I noticed the X800 XLs are going for about 160, so i might just grab another one of those as this one had never let me down except for overheating. Any other recommendations?

so what makes the 7600GT so much better than say an X850 XT?

the only major difference i can see off hand is that the 7600 uses Pixelshader 3.0 instead of the 850's 2.0. Other than that they seem about the same and the 850 even has 256bit memory compared to the 128 of the 7600.

plus the X850 is cheaper.

thoughts?

Hey, if you just have a loose Cap. and plan to trash the card, send it this way ;) Hehe... I'm a little iffy about repairing computer parts, but I know I could of repaired my 7800GT when it broke. Just a capaciter breaking off isn't that big of a deal to replace/resolder. However, if it's under warrenty, I wouldn't touch it.

Ya i don't think it would be that hard to fix if the cap needs to be replaced just get some desoldering wick and take the extra solder off. Then the Cap should come right off. Just replace it with the same one and it should work.

As I said, the same happened with my 7800. If the darn thing didn't have a lifetime warrenty, I would of just fixed it myself. I know the whole return process was freakin hell!

you have a 7800? not in ur secs other one

so i suppose i should attempt to have it fixed before i get another one.

where would be a place to go to get it fixed? I might try my local PC repair shops and see what they say. Thanks for the tips, for the time being ill be obtaining a PCI card so that i can simply use the computer, i need it for homework and things like that.

I had to borrow a friends video card just so i could go into the BIOS and change the graphics adapter from PCI-E to PCI.
