Replacement 4850 Still Crashes

Hey guys,

I bought a Sapphire 4850 about 3 months ago. It crashed when I plugged my 2nd monitor in and froze the screen along with repeating audio while playing games after a few minutes.

I contacted Sapphire about it so they told me to send it back for a new one. I got my new one today and it does the exact same thing.

I've had a Asus 3450 before I got the 4850, and it was fine. But while I had it in waiting for my replacement, it started to do the same thing. I've had the 3450 in for at least 5 months without a problem, but as soon as I put the 4850 in, both cards are screwing up.

It's really frustrating seeing as I spent $200 on the 4850, and I can't even use it really. I need your help!

Not really sure what you mean, but...

Just to try to clarify more:
I originally started with the 3450 when I built the computer, it ran fine, no crashes. I wanted to play more games more so I bought the 4850 about 3 months ago, and I got crashes within 5 or 10 minutes of playing any game. So I took that out and put the 3450 back in. Just recently I decided to return the 4850 to Sapphire and just received the replacement back today. So I took the 3450 out, uninstalling all drivers before putting the 4850 back in, finding out it does the exact same thing as the original 4850.

But I did some reading on the motherboard (because that's what I think the problem is) finding out that it DOES NOT have PCI Express 2.0, which is what the 4850 is suppose to run on. Not really sure if that's it or not.

My brothers is coming home from university in 2 weeks, so I'll try my card in his PC to see if it does the same.

that is most likely your issue wha motherboard do you have? And have you tried updating your drivers? Also it maybe overheating but lets try the drivers first.

It's an Asus P5N-E SLI as I said in my first post and the BIOS version is 0901 released in 2008/02/20 and version 1301 is the newest released in 2008/10/16. I wasn't sure how to update BIOS so I didn't bother. And Everest is only saying the motherboard is at 29 Celsius, so it can't be overheating while gaming.

I would definitely look into updating your BIOS, just to make sure. The BIOS file should be available at the Asus website. Instructions should be in the same area.

Just for your info I that wasnt int your first post im just trying to get as much info as possible and im not talking about your motherboard bios Im talkign about the drivers for your graphics card and the temp of the graphics card

Thanks Bodaggit, I will try that sometime today. And the drivers for my 4850 are the latest ones, because I made sure on the ATI site that it was the newest. And my temps are only at about 37 Celsius on idle according to Catalyst.

Might not be a problem BUT,Have you checked its not your Power supply thats the problem?
I know thats a good Psu you have but it might be faulty and not giving the card the power it requires? Just a thought.
