edit to short version of post: I've skimmed thru the faq and pretty much would be happy going with the Neo HE 500 if someone can assure me it has all the right connectors for my 'old ' system. That's what i'm unsure of at this point. Connections. Oh and also it says it's Size: 5.9” (D) x 5.9” (W) x 3.4” (H) while my sl400 is L5.9" x W5.5" x H3.4" and it seems .4 'should' fit on my full tower but not sure

Thanks

I believe my PS is going. http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=25400

I bought it 2 yrs and 11 months ago when I got a new MB and P4. I cant find the receipt so I doubt they will cover it. The computer continuously 'powers up and down' for about a second after I shut it down so I have to unplug it so it doesnt 'whirr' all the time. (probably bad for drives too)

looking at antec's new supplies http://www.antec.com/Search.bok?category=Power+Supplies I'm a bit confused as to exactly which ones may be compatible. And it's probably a good idea to maybe even get a bit larger one right?

When I look at the apparent successor SP400, http://www.antec.com/Detail.bok?no=394 I see all sorts of different connectors that I know I dont have now (SATA PCI E) so I'm not sure if I can even get a 'new' supply or must search for just the old 'new' one?

any guidance?

PC Contents: I have 2 HD (sometimes a 3rd but rarely), CD burner, floppy, ATI 9800, 2 other fans, CD player, 4 sticks RAM, USB keyboard/mouse/printer, sound card, p4p800 deluxe.

now that i look at this chart: http://pcworld.com/zoom?id=119585&page=2&zoomIdx=1 I definitely think I need something bigger to be safe.

P4 100
2 HD 50
2 CD 70
4 RAM 48
key/mouse 6
graphics 100 (they say 100 for hi- end so mine isn't that high i'm sure)
sound 10
pci 10
fans 6

400 total so I bet i need 500 to be super safe

Currently I run an Antec True Power 480w on a mid sized tower here while waiting to upgrade the case with a faster cpu and sata array. At that time I will finally put in the TP II 550w model seen at http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=22550 that I currently have sitting around at the moment. That will work out in a full tower as well as provide SLI support if there are any intentions for that. Will this be for a server or just full tower desktop?

A new supply will work without issues. The size isn't a problem, and you can just leave the additional connectors unplugged. Your consumption estimate is a little high, but nonetheless a good 500W unit will give you plenty of breathing space and room to upgrade. FYI, a 9800Pro uses a touch under 50W at full load.

The NeoHE 500W is a good quality unit, and I doubt you'd be disappointed. Other great options include the Enhance 5150GH or Corsair HX520W.

The TP II 480w has been a good workhorse supply here with 4 drives(2 hd-2 optical) installed. If it wasn't for the 4 extra fans 3 120mm with a 140mm it would also run an air conditioned case along with water cooling. With the amount of cooling space and extra hardwares the TP II 550w is one of several that will handle quite a bit. ceewi1 has seen good results with the NeoHE models by Antec as well. But if you decide to go with another brand you may want to look over a list of supplies that are sorted by the "good" and "bad" lists. This is only a partial list at the moment.

Good:
Akasa PaxPower - Antec(except Smart Power models) - Astec - AOpen - Channel Well - Coolermaster - Enermax
- Enlight - Fortron Source (Sparkle) - HEC - Hi-Power - Jeantech - NSpire - OCZ Technology - PC Power & Cooling - PowerMan
- Seasonic - SilenX - SilverStone - Tagan - TTGI/SuperFlower - Vantec - Zippy / Emacs - Verax - Zalman
- Corsair

Bad:
Allied - Antec Smart Power models(recommend True Power or NeoHE) - Aspire - CoolMax - DEER - EYE-T
- KingStar - L&C - Linkworld - Logisys - PowerMagic - PowerUp - Powmax - Q-Tec - Raidmax - Skyhawk - Star
- Turbolink - Ultra - ThermalTake

thanks for the info. My PS tester should be here tomorrow along with other stuff i ordered. So i'll find out for sure it's the PS but I'm pretty sure it is.

In the event it isn't it never hurts to have an extra supply onhand. Either you or someone else you know will have a need for it sooner or later. You can spend the most on the world's best make and model and still see it go doa. Or you run across an older case lacking a working supply.
