replacing fans

Hello, I am wondering if it is possible to replace a fan in a laptop. I am not sure yet what kind of fan as I'd have to open it up, and since its 3 years old, its out of warranty.

Anyway, my girlfriend feels like her fan isn't making enough noisy, like if its never working. As for her brother's laptop, it automatically shuts off after less than an hour of normal use cuz its overheating.

Would it be possible to change fans on those laptops in order to get more efficient fans. The laptops are Toshiba and I think Acer.

Ok, quick answers. Yes, it is possible to replace fans inside the laptop. The manufacturer of the laptop usually sells replacement parts as do a number of websites which stock up on parts for repairs. I recently replaced the heatsink\fan on my buddy's laptop, it's a lot older than 3 years and it was a real pain. In the end, turned out the fan wasn't getting power so i took it apart twice trying to get it to work pointlessly. Laptops aren't something i'd recommend to anyone who's a novice or amateur when it comes to hardware. You need specific tools, serious organizational skills (you wouldn't believe how many screws are involved) and there are just so many things that can go wrong due to space constraints.

If you decide to do it, however, first thing to do is check the manufacturer's site for a manual, you'll see just what's in store and be better prepared. Toshiba | Acer .

A thing to note is, the manufacturer's site may include resources for parts as well as repair centers. Toshiba for example has the option, i didn't notice it on Acer's.
