Hello guys, I need your advice. :)

My laptop - HP Pavilion dv9700
s/n: CNF8291SZD
p/n: FM625EA#ACB

After 13 months of perfect working, once it refused to turn on. Fisrt I was working from battery for a couple hours, then battery was low, it switched off and since this it is dead ( I went to the service centre and they checked it briefly and told me - it is a mother board problem. I went to another service to compare prices for MB replacement, but I was told there that it is worth to buy a new laptop than to replace this MB, because it tends to fail again and again in the future. I don't want to buy a new laptop, because I liked mine and I don't have money to buy the one I would like to, as a replacement for this one.

Could you please tell, whether those MBs are really that bad that it's not worth to replace them?

Thank you.

mother boards come up for that laptop at 100 to 300 usd dollars, probably be hard to obtain new one cheap which means the chance of it failing again would increase.
it would also be quite tricky to replace, assuming the person you spoke to is correct and it isnt another problem, these boards have a problem with the nivida chipset on board i remember a big commotion about these chipsets a while ago, it is likely if you got a new board it would fail agian try talking to hp see if they can help, a bit of quick reading showed other customers calling for a recall on this laptop they may have done something to sort it out, probably not but worth a try

its this problem

just get a new laptop and ditch the HP one. their customer service is horrible, and they refuse to admit that the chips are faulty, when nvidia said they were faulty themselves. HP continues to make money and force people to pay $400 for repairs...

Thanx guys.

well, in one service they've chargde me up to 350 £ (I am in UK), in another told me - 100£ but this is only the cost of motherboard. One hour of work costs around 47-60 £ but I don't really know how long does it takes to replace it.

Is there a chance that Nvidia has fixed the problem and other MB on the market now are OK? Sorry for the silly question, but is it possible to make laptop work with similar MB, I mean w/o this chip or replace it with smth? I guess not....

It is known that Nvidia GeForce 8 series have some problem and won't last.
I think it would probably cost you £250 to repair and last for another 12 months??

It may be better to get a new one. Apperantly that HP Pavilion dv9700 have Blu-ray rom/ T7300/ 2GB RAM/ 320GB HDD. It may worth to get it back, take out all component and sell it on ebay. Or sell the whole thing as faulty. You should be able to make some money from it.
