Replacing system HDD IDE for an SSD SATA without reinstalling OS

My question: is it possible to replace an IDE HDD (where the system is installed - Win XP) by a SSD (of course without reinstalling the OS)?

I have a motherboard with IDE and S-ATA capabilities but for some reasons my system is installed on a HDD on the IDE interface. I know that it is possible to switch to a SSD through a gost copy of the system HDD partition and then exchanging for a new HDD or SSD but when the interfaces are different, what happens?

Thanks

It's always best to clean install to an ssd. But if you can't you might check to see if 7 is going to do it's native ssd tweaks with a copy/clone method.
