Replacing video card

Hi

I have used my NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT in perhaps 1 year, but now I have borrowed my buddy's NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT, it has 1GB of GDDR2 while my current one has 512 GDDR3. I have no idea if it would be possible to replace my current one with this one. It is also possible that my friend's card is broke in some way, so I'm also wondering if it could harm my other components.

I am not good with computers so I would really appreciate if someone could answer these questions.
 
oh gddr3 and gddr2 are different types of memory for graphics cards just like ddr2 and ddr3 are as RAM. you should be able to use your friends card in your computer as long as it has the same connector to the motherboard as your 9600 GT (pci-e im guessing) and if your friends card is broken just do a close inspection of the components on it, ive heard that some of them can easily be scraped off (the flat resistors) and if there is no prob then you should really just try it, but just to be safe i would recommend you use it in an older system, if it really is broken like you say. hope this helps :)
 
if I were you I would simply upgrade ur current card. its woefully underpowered. I recommend a 9800gtx if u don't want to spend much money. for a mid upgrade a gtx 260 core 216 is good. for a massive upgrade go with the gtx 285. they are pretty cheap these days. also think about ati! a 5770 is cheaper than the 260 core 216 and is a lot better

Your 9600GT is the better card, even with 512mb. of memory.
 
Alright thanks for your answers, but I realised that they both had gddr2 memory.

I actually tried the cards together, which was a mistake because my screen got destroyed for some reason (a SyncMaster 931bw, had it for 2 years). It actually worked the first time with both cards and I noticed a big performance change :) But then when I rebooted my comp my screen just stayed black at the booting up and made a weird noise. I tried the screen with other computers so I am certain that it got destroyed.

Off topic:
I feel that my computer should have better performance than it got, so I am wondering if there is like a specific component that delivers less performance. I will make a list of my components here:


  • OS: Windows Vista Home Basic (I know that vista takes like 1gb of the ram, could that be a reason?)
  • CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+ (2CPUs), ~3.2GHz
  • RAM: 4094MB DDR2
  • Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 512MB GDDR2
  • Mother Board: Asus Crosshair
  • HDD: 250GB, 7200 RPM, SATA-II

So I would want to know three things: Why my screen broke, which one of these Video Cards that is the best one: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT GDDR2 512MB or NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT GDDR2 1024MB and if you think that there is a specific component that delivers less performance.
