Resetting CPU frequency?

Was having some computer difficulties.

either displays would not turn on when computer started up.
Computer would just sit there with the loading light on constantly.
I just recently replaced the hard drive not to long ago.
Been a couple of weeks, this is the first problem since the swap.

I removed the battery from inside the computer, re installed the battery and im back up and working.

Why did i have to do this?
what is wrong?

on one of my start up screens, i am reading that i need to re set th CPU frequency in the CMOS set up.
I went to the CMOS set up screen and didnt see anything for resetting my CPU's frequency.
How do i do this? and what do i reset it to?

Also, when i go to restart or shut down my computer now, computer will start shutting down, both displays will shut down, but tower wont completely shut down. All programs will close and everything, both displays power down, and then i end up having to flip the switch on my power supply to get my computer to shut down.

This just started happening after i removed that battery on my motherboard.

Computer is a Gateway GT4023E
stock mother board- http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=256
EVGA 8500gt
AGI 600 or 650w power supply
Sound blaster X-Fi xtreme gamer
extra gb of ram
WD 500gb SATA Hard drive.

Have been running this set up for a good year or so now minus th hard drive.
Hard drive was replaced when the seagate 320gb crashed about a couple of weeks ago.

Any and all help is much needed.

Thanks

With a gateway computer, I wouldn't think you'd have to bother with the CPU frequency. Those computers are typically automatically managed. Now I have some a few computers that when they're CMOS is reset, the frequency goes to some very low setting. Perhaps that's what it was referring to. But still, I'd think it'd set itself back to the correct setting.

Honestly, I'm almost wondering if you have a failing power supply. I had very similar problems once with a bad power supply. However, if the problems began with a new hard drive, I'd try removing it as a temporary measure. See if you continue to have problems without the drive connected (both power and interface).

I really dont know whats up.

i removed the battery, and reinstalled it, all seemed well. then bam. it started happening again.

the power supply isnt even 5 months old.

edit- just tried removing the battery and reinstalling the battery. now im not getting any response from my computer

Hey z400, I also had the same problem of frequency with my computer like a year ago but i dont remember how i fixed it. regarding the problem of shutting down sometime it is also caused by the damaged XP,i think so, i dont know the exact reason but i overcomed my shutting down problem by reinstalling XP.....MIGHT work for u MIGHT

turns out...

it was that batteries fault on the MoBo
I got a crazy idea, i pulled the battery, replaced it with one from another desktop.
Wa-la
works great.
removed the used battery and replaced it with a brand new one.
