I just bought a new 20" plasma monitor by Optiquest. I previously had a regular, 17" trinitron monitor, and I noticed that my range of resolutions has gone down. With my trinitron, I was able to go all the way up to 1600 x 1200. With the new 20", I can only go up to 1280 x 1024...Now, when I unplugged my trinitron and plugged in the new plasma, the available resolutions in the system preferences DID go up to 1600, but after restarting the computer they went away. I do a lot of web design, and a larger resolution is sometimes needed for my work. I was wondering if it was at all possible to get these larger resolutions back, and if so is it safe to use on the new monitor? It sounds to me like anything above the specified 1280 x 1024 could damage it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have plugged your new monitor in and restared the computer, and those are the highest reslutions avaible, then those are the highest reslutions the monitor can support. Most plasma, and LCD screens have lower reslautions for there size then CRT's do.

I could not find anything about a 20" plasma by a company called Optiquest. I did, however, find a 19" LCD monitor by Viewsonic with a model name of Optiquest... Is this what you have? Please keep your specs straight if you want help as it's hard to find info when we don't know what you're talking about! 
Anyway, if that's the monitor, it can only go up to 1280x1024. Read the specs before purchasing.

Yeah sorry I didn't post any specs...My dad actually bought it for me for as a graduation present. I was going to get a laptop but I've put so much money and time into my PC, that it wasn't worth it. (Besides...It kicks ass ) But yeah that's the one he bought me...I didn't know anything about it, being that I wasn't the one who perchased it. I just looked for the first name I saw on the monitor, which was Optiquest. But thanks so much for the info; I appreciate it.
Edit: The only reason I asked is because after reading the book and looking at the specs, it notes 1280 x 1024 as the "optimum" resolution, which I interpreted as the resolution that looked best on the monitor, but could be made higher. Now on my trinitron, there were some resolutions that just didn't look good on it, but were still available. So I thought maybe some others would be on the Viewsonic.

Ahhh...sorry if I got a bit snappy about checking specs and all ^^;
The "optimum"/native resolutio is the highest the monitor can go. You only have so many pixles on the LCD, so you can't go above that without scrolling or something like that. Well, you CAN, I guess, but things would be very messed up looking, and windows, by default, won't allow it.
