recently installed windows xp on my system, but now it turns on, gets to the moving windows load screen(the colour one) shows the bsod and restarts, this keeps happening. what can i do to fix this problem?
There can be many reasons for your computer to restart.
I have had the same problem abouth 13 times (seriously).
01: There is an error in your Memory, making windows halt and restart on own demand.
02: There is an hardware error: (Witch was my cause).
03: Your CPU is running hot due to error.
04: Other.
It is hard to tell. Do it "Dump Physical memory" 1-99.
Or does it come as a sudden flash?
I had the same problem, i tryed just about anything. Then i found out that the problem was in my computer.
I then said: "Oh you crappy computer"
Then i bougth a new one and problem was solved.
To see if your memory is at fault here one frree Linux utility called Memtest can be found at http://www.memtest.org/ for the 64 bit dual core cpu support and the updated original diagnostic tool found at http://www.memtest86.com/
The bios may have need for an update since this is the first time XP has been run on your system. Posting the make and model board would help here. An overheating cpu would be less likely since this is seen when first powering up the system while it could be failing at this time. A psu or hard drive issue could be another thing to look at. Then the other possible bad news is a chipset on the board now seeing issues.
XP has it's own form of crash control to restart the system to avoid system locks when programs stall. But this is happening before even starting one at the desktop. But you could also be looking at a bad startup loading along with Windows even though a little rare. One way to see if you have a hardware not software related problem would be the F8 start menu where you would choose the Safe mode command prompt only option to run the check disk utility by typing "chkdsk" at the prompt. You could also boot from the installation disk and choose the recovery console option to run check disk by that method. Once that is run try booting up in safe mode to see how far you get. If you still see continued restarts a hardware problem would be more apparent.
