Restarting a computer?

Does restarting a computer improve its performance?

e.g. after a month if my computer is up, if i restart it, will it go faster?

im currently having an argument with a friend >_< hes suggesting it does absolutely nothing, and "you only need to reboot a pc because the softwares causes errors in OS sometimes etcetcetc, that happens rarley, and computers DONT REST"

im suggesting the opposite, that you need to reboot to free up memory and it'll improve performance then if you had left it on for a while, especially if you have less ram, or more ram intensive programs

p.s. and i do consider a reboot a "rest", which i think he considers it so too

i agree with your view on that. programs being opened and closed tend to leave remenants of that program and will increase memory usage. i dont think its a major issue if the programs and operating system manage their memory usage correctly.
i have noticed however that my system tends to be sluggish after being on for long periods of time

Yeh, i have to agree with you on this one aswell. Its mainly to do with the RAM, programs leave stransds of data allover the memory, this goes for the hard drive temp directories aswell. This is proven by the PC going a bit more slowly after leaving it on overnight downloading a large movie file, the PC only regains its full speed after a reboot, this is because upon restarting all temporoary memories are cleared.

do a hard boot...ie Shutting right down and then manually pressing the power button to turn the machine back on

a reboot is different than shutdown and restart

does it have any different effects?

the only thing thats different is that all the hardware is disengaged when you do a full shutdown and reboot.
the memory is still cleared when you just restart. simply restarting is also quicker cos the hardware doesn't have to reinitialise

Yea, it clears your cache, programs are suppost to remove it when their closed, but they dont and windows aint worth at shit at it!

Switch off = cold boot
restart = warm boot

Yes, there will be a difference, i tried keeping my comp on for 9 days in a row and my free memory got lower and lower, and programs responded much slower as well.

I find that ending the explorer.exe program for a minute and restarting it dumps out a good load of memory.
