I have XP installed now, and I want to install a new OS. Is it possible for me to make a backup of it? So that if I don't like the OS, I can start fresh?

you can use a program like ghost or clonezilla and it will make an image of your computer and save it to a dvd or something.

I download it and burn the .iso. Then I boot with that. Then what? Do I have to have an external hdd to back up to?

clonezilla are we talking about? It doesnt look like clonezilla will burn to a cd/dvd natively there is a tweak to do... but it will go directly to a hard drive.

then when you want to restore you will boot back up to the cd and choose restore and pick your image.

i pulled that from clonezillas site

Ghost is much easier to use and very reliable for a symantec product... they do have a few good programs. but it isnt free.
