Restore function not working

I have a Windows 7 64bit pro machine and am generally very pleased with it, however, on several occasions recently I have needed to use the restore function.
On each time I tried to go back, even by a day or so, the restore process went through the motions and then told me it had failed.

What's been happening is that I have lost the use of a process e.g. my old Canon scanner or similar device, and I have realized it often followed a Microsoft update, (which seem to be coming faster and more frequent than ever these days)!

Over the last year or so I tried to restore about six times and none have succeeded. In most cases I have been able (by the use of these forums) to resolve the problem by some other means but it begs the question "What's the point of a restore function if it never works?" How do I get it to work? It never let me down on my old XP machine.

On a final note of concern I found that I have been rapidly running out of hard drive memory and found it was caused by the System Volume Information files. Apparently these are the restore points. I discovered that the default volume of the disc space was set to 50% (of 1000GB). I have now set it to 10%. This was after the failures of the restore function.

I can't guarantee that it will work afterwards but try turning off system restore and then turn it back on and set a restore point. Unfortunately, system restore has been very buggy even back in the XP days, but it generally did work correctly for me when I used it. It just all depends on whats wrong with the system if it works or not. I'm currently working on a laptop that I tried using system restore to fix the issue and it ended up making the issue worse after the restore then before. So I have a feeling a reinstall of windows 7 will be in order for my client.

Thanks Johnb35, I will give it a try.
I was wondering if I turn off these darn Windows updates my machine might be better off! I have a conspiracy theory that every time there is an up date my machine slows down a bit. Maybe it's just a theory but if a second or two is added to start up type timers at each Windows up date then this is the effect I seem to be getting. It certainly seemed that way with my XP machine and is one reason I changed to a new machine.
Also it seems that my machine always plays up following an up date. I know they (MSN) up date for good reasons but it seems that my machine goes wrong following these changes and is one reason that I try to do a restore.

When was the last time windows was reinstalled on this machine? If its been more than a couple years, its time for a fresh install. What processor and how much system ram are you using?
