Return of the cooling problem

Hi all, I recently cleaned out all the vents/fans/heatsink on the desktop, as it had started getting too hot, ever since doing this the heating problem I had with a different case returned. While someone was on bejewelled earlier the cpu reached 53c and what I think is the cpu fan reached 5400 rpm, it's noisy as hell! I'm just wondering if I have caused this myself removing the heatsink to brush all the dust out. Should the heatsink be removed while cleaning? also the computer had been running for about 20 minutes, if you are to remove the heatsink, should you make sure it's cool? thanks

Did you clean off the old thermal paste and reapply new?
Not yet, this was my next step, should this be done every time the heatsink is removed, thermal paste is a grey area for me, I have done it before, but not much.

Anytime the heatsink is removed you have broken the bond and need to remove all old and apply new. If you just leave the old and just reattach heatsink there won't be good heat transfer.

Thank you, I feared having to re apply paste, I'm going to order some Arctic Silver, as I've heard it's supposed to be good. Do you clean all your fans and heatsink? if so, do you just take the fan off the heatsink and brush the dust off as best you can? I took it off for ease, and to try and keep the dust away from the motherboard.

I clean my fans and heatink every so often. I just use a can of compressed air and blow them out. Make sure you hold the fan so it doesn't overspin.

Not a bad plan, I may have to invest in one, the dust build up was pretty colossal, especially in the heatsink. Annoyingly I'm sure I've some paste somewhere in the house from my last thermal paste incident, but I have no idea where. Anyway, thanks again for all the help, it'll definitely be of massive use to me, as I do like to periodically clean them out.

Popped into my local computer shop and the guy there was good enough to give me some for free as they didn't sell it, they use it for repairs there. I have reapplied thermal paste, it's all good, except the graphics card seems slightly hot, I have been advised to apply some thermal paste, but graphics card doesn't have a even though pc wizard tells me it's running at 30%. Anyway, as you can see, much better
