Ribbon on screen

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, about 4 yrs old, and it has developed a white ribbon one and a half inches wide running from top to bottom of the screen about three inches from the left hand side. Initially on powering up I can see the whole screen with only slightly wavy lines where the ribbon will be, but very quickly it becomes more and more opaque. Obviously, I resize the web page, or whatever I'm working on, so I can see it, but it effectively cuts down my screen size from 17.3 ins to just a bit bigger than a netbook.

Does anyone know if this is this a fixable problem, or is it goodbye to my Toshiba and time to get another one? Thanks.

Most likely bad onboard video. You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers but I doubt that will do anything. Looks like you'll need a new laptop.

If you want you can try hooking it up to an external monitor- that would help to determine whether or not it is the screen or the video card. If it's the screen you're hooped unless you want to just use it with another monitor, if it's the video card that's fixable but perhaps costly to fix.
