Right memory speed for older Asus (2 years ago) board?

Back in early '07 I built a comp for a friend using this motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131013.
They think a memory upgrade is needed, maybe processor too since they're pretty cheap these days. Anyway, on the specs for that board, it says the the max memory is 8gb (looking to get them 4gb), and that the "Memory Standard" is DDR2 800. Of course now almost 2 years later, there's a lot higher speeds for really cheap.

My question:
Can I safely stick in something faster than DDR2 800? Like DDR2 1066?

Or what about even higher, like DDR3 stuff?

While I'm at it, I may go ahead and replace the processor with something like this one: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10009194

Anything else I need to keep in mind when choosing/upgrading these parts?

I really only built like half a dozen or so computers for myself and friends 2 to 3 years ago and haven't really had the need to upgrade any of them (and they all still work great *knock on wood*)....so I really don't keep up with what new stuff is compatible with old stuff. Some things are so cheap now, I may go and upgrade my own now!

Thanks for y'all's help!
