Rj-11/rj-45?

Hey all,

I've been helped enormously by Trizoy in another thread so I thought I'd give him a rest :P

I would like to know what sort of cable I would use to connect my adsl filter to my modem/router and then from my modem/router to my network card in my desktop pc.

I'm not sure whether it is RJ-11 or RJ-45

You would need the RJ-11 port to connect the adsl micro filter to your modem/router, and the RJ-45 cable to connect the modem/router to the nerwork card, the rj-11 cable is the smaller plug, more square one and the rj-45 cable is the one with the fatter more rectangular plugs
 
Does the length of rj11 or rj45 cable matter? For example at the moment The length of rj11 cable going from the filter to my modem is 15 metres.

What I am considering is buying a wireless modem/router and then hard wiring my desktop to the router but sticking a wireless card in the laptop.

My desktop is fairly old about 4 years but it has a 10/100 LAN card. Will that be fast enough for my purposes? For example my internet connection is 2mb will the card be able to support that speed and also transfer files at the full 100mbps speed of 12.5mb. I don't quite understand the 10/100 ethernet switching thing.

the filter to modem should be connected via rj-11 and then modem to NIC via rj-45

rj-45 cable specification i believe is 100 meters before interference becomes a major factor. rj-11 (commonly known as phone cord) should be less than 10 feet.
 
I have my current setup with a 15 metre rj11 cable. Although it doesn't seem to be causing too many problems at the moment. The speed restriction is usb to my computer which only supports 12mbps. That is why I am just about to install a pci usb 2.0 card.

However I am wondering whether the long cable run of rj11 will slow me down.

rj-11 are not poorly shielded so long cables lead to a lot of interference. the usb 1.1 shouldn't be your bottleneck.
 
ah I thought usb 1.1 could only run at 12mbps maximum which equals 1.5mb?

My internet connection is 2mb.

the usb 1.1 connection is 12 megabits per second. your connection is 2.0 megabits per second.
 
aha I see.

I have been misled as someone told me that my connection was 2 megaBYTE and that USB 1/1.1 could only support a max of 12 megaBITS which is the equivalent of 1.5 megaBYTES.

So, when you see isps advertising as 1mb and 2mb connection they are megabits and not megabytes?
