rookie w/dumb question

I want transfer file from one HD to another. Now I only have computer to do this. How is this done? After transfering everything to the new HD do I lose all info on the old HD? One more ?, could I use the OS from the old HD (now on new HD) in another computer? Thanks for the help!

There is software you can use to make an image of the hard drive and write it to the new one. Ghost is a popular one.

The old hard drive will hold the data until you erase it (or until it fails if you want to be technical).

You would not be able to boot the old HDD in another computer unless you re-install windows. The motherboards are probably different and the master boot record will not recognize the motherboard of the other machine and therefore will not be able to boot to windows.

Sadly, XP is not like 98 in that respect.
