Rootkit:ZeroAccess

Hi all,

Got a PC on my desk that ComboFix is reporting has the Zeroaccess rootkit. No problem, downloaded the zeroaccess rootkit removal tool and that says its clean.

I'm now on the second run through of Combofix so hope that will fix it, any other ideas please?

Currently dont have internet/network access for this PC.

Apart from not having network/internet the PC seems fine.

Combofix can usually get it, but I also run the Kaspersky TDSS killer as well. Post a HijackThis log for John to look over when he pops in.

Unfortunately with the zero access rootkit it will usually corrupt your internet connection. ive had better luck doing a system restore before getting infected then trying to get the internet working again. Im typing this from my phone so cant offer too much help at this point. i would do the system restore first and then rescan your system afterwards.
 
Combofix usually says if you can't get online after the scan to reboot and see if that fixes the connection issue. If not I'd try Winsockfix, and if that doesn't work do a system restore as John suggested.
 
Update:

Combofix has been run at least 3 times, each time it reports the rootkit is present. The report at the end of each run, except the first, has not shown anything.

System Restore is switched off, so thats not an option.

I've tried rebuilding the TCP/IP stack and also Winsock.

Looks like I may have to wipe and start again on this one.

Ugggg.. I can't believe people turn system restore off and they don't have a backup plan in place.

Like I said, the zero access rootkit corrupts your internet connection, most of the time its the netbt.sys file and a couple others. I dread it when I see this on clients systems. Half the time system restore work and other other half, its format and reinstall time. I wished I had a system i could use just to try and figure out how to repair the internet after the infection. I tried it one time for like an hour and gave up and reinstalled windows.

However, I was just browsing the net and found something that may work. I suggest to turn on system restore and create a restore point. Then do the following.

Please download the attached file.

Inside is:
afd.reg
fixme+restart.bat

Extract both files to the infected computer's desktop.

First double-click afd.reg and allow it to merge into the registry. You should receive a successful message.

Now reboot your PC.

Once you have rebooted...

Test your internet, If it still is not working, run the fixme+restart.bat file by double-clicking it.
Your PC will reboot again. Once you are back in Windows, test your internet again.
