Router Advice

Hello,

We always have big Internet problems and our provider says is it our router that is the problem. And i think they are right. today for example 3 hours ago there was just no Internet i linked my comp directly to the modem and it was just fine, rebooting the router several times did the trick

We currently have a Belkin F5D8233-4v3.
our Internet provider should give us 8 MB/s of course we nave make that because our cables in this town suck but we never come above 700-750 kbps a friend of mine had this speed too but when they bought a new router it changed to 1500 kbps.

My question.. I need a new router that has 4 cable inputs and provides wireless Internet. It has to be mutch faster than the last one too or else give me some advice on the speed, does the modem count in too?(SpeedTouch 510)

will this increase my speed too? because the transerdata from this one is 54 mbps and for the one i have now is 300(though i doubt that...)

Because i really want faster internet that 700 kbps max
 
So it seems that your device is actually a modem and router all in one unit correct? What is your dsl speed that you are paying for? You have to remember that some lines aren't capable of high speeds especially if they are older lines. Say your paying for 6mb speed, your actual line speed may be lower and usually is. And your actual download speed will only be 750kb/second, and will be slower than that if you are using the wireless. So if you are actually having problems with your download speed, contact your internet provider so they can run tests on your line and possibly give you a new modem/router to replace the one you have.
 
Alright i've got a new router. my friend helped me out but we just can't instal it, so stupid... i had a modem: speedtouch 510 then a router: belkin 5D8233-4v3(01) now i have bought a new router, a linksys WRT54GL V1.1.
when i instal the driver acording to the cd coming with it it tries to connect to the internet but can't. i don't know if what kind of connection we have but i use DHCP atm. still no internet... my modem gives internet for sure because when i connect my pc to the modem there is no problem

i'm using my old belkin atm
if you need more info to help me tell me.

I've got the WRT54GL myself and it works great. I did have trouble getting it to connect originally though.

It turns out my modem was a router/modem combination device.

I tried the cascading routers tutorial first, which worked for me, but later kept dropping the connection. Changing the IP (which must be followed by power cycling the network to take effect) is what ultimately worked for me.

To change the IP of the Linksys router do this: login to your Linksys router and go to the setup page (should be the first page). You should see a label called "Local IP Address" followed by four boxes. Change it to 192.168.2.1 (This number could vary, but that combination will likely work)

Then power cycle the network. (This means shutting down all computers on the network, unplugging the Linksys router, and then unplugging the modem all in that order. Then plug the modem back in and wait for it to power up completely (we're assuming it's a modem/router here). After that, plug the Linksys router in and wait for it to fully power on, then turn the computers on.

Don't bother using the CD unless you really want its special features. It's not needed just to connect to the internet.
 
You should be able to just use the DHCP setting - I wouldn't change anything else from the default unless you know what you're doing.

When I first connected the router I got no internet connection either. It was only after making the change that I was able to connect.
 
Glad to hear that. :) If you're using the wireless, be sure to look at the security tab and set up some security options like WPA. If you're not planning on using the wireless, then disable it.

On the wireless tab:
subsection - Basic Wireless Settings

Wireless can be disabled by choosing
Wireless Network Mode: disabled

subsection - Wireless Security
Wireless security can be setup here

On the Administration tab:
Here you can set/change the router's password (The default username is "admin" if you do change the password)


If you ever forget the password, you can always reset the router by pressing and holding the reset button on the back of the router for a full 5 seconds or so. (It is a small recessed button). This will restore the router back to the factory default settings. If you do this, you will need to go through the process of changing the IP address and any other custom settings all over again though.
