Router dropping AIM connection

I just bought a Netgear wireless b MR814v3 router and it works fine besides the fact that it drops my aol instant messenger connection a lot on my wired computer. It only seems to do it when I am not active on AIM and have my away message on or something. i havent experienced it on my wireless laptop a lot. I think maybe once. I thought it was a firewall problem so i disabled windows xp firewall but it still did it. then i change the port from 5190 to 80 because i read that the http port (80) is always open for traffic. i am lost on a solution. it only loses the AIM connection and not the LAN connection.

I don't think the problem has to do with your network, I think it has to do with AIM. If this was a problem with your network, the network connection would be dropped when the AIM connection dropped.

i forgot to mention the connection to the lan stays on and shows ive been on for like two hours..aim disconnects then connects back right away. i had router before this, a netgear, and i never had any problems with it but i realize this is a totally different thing. im stumped. it hasnt disconnected today because i was active the whole time i was on so hopefully ill figure this out sooner or later

i have the same problem, only my internet connection goes slow, then speeds up. i have comcast, and am also very confused why it does this.

im postive its the router and i think i have tracked it down to a port problem because when i enable the computer to be a DMZ server i dont get the disconnects. im still looking into a solution.

Do you have a wired network or a wireless network?

I don't know much about AIM ports, because I don't use AIM, but on this site it says that you need to open ports 5190 through 5193.

hmm, for me, it happens on my wireless laptop and my wired computer..i think i have solved the problem because it hasnt kicked me off in a while. when i did port forwarding before i was doing it to the router address (192.168.0.1 and i tried on my computer IP (192.168.0.2). this time i forwarded it to the modem IP that is actually on the internet. ill post up if i find anything else happens. oh and yes i saw that thing for ports 5190-5193 so i opened up 4000-5200 to cover them all because i read 4443 or something needs to be opened for direct IM connections. so hopefully i found the solution  thank you :)

EDIT: its back to its old tricks because i am an idiot and forgot to uncheck the DMZ server option so i thought it was working but its not..still working on a solution
