hey guys....

just recently aquired a router from aol-thing is that ive heard a few people talking about router firewalls, what is a router firewall?

is it a seperate program like zone alarm etc or is it a built in security software?

it is wireless router but is hooked up to my desktop, when im downloadin ethernet and internet led's flash (dunno if that makes any difference lol)

The firewall on routers is hardwired into the router for security purposes. The blinking lights on the front of your router is to show what ports are connected and when the lights are blinking, it shows which ports are transferring data.

what router do you have? You can configure this by telnetting into the router via web browser and through its control panel.

speedtouch 546?

I don't see a 576 listed...

or is it the 585?

• 4 x Ethernet (RJ45) ports (10/100BaseT HD/FD)
- WAN
• ADSL (RJ11) for ADSL/POTS and ADSL/ISDN
• Embedded Firewall
• 802.1x/PSK WPA (WPA-PSK)
• 64/128bit WEP encryption
• Wireless client registration/access control (with physical push button)
• Content Filtering
- Basic : URL white list/blacklist
- Standard : Subscription based URL blocking using a network located URL database
for URL classification.
- Advanced : Standard Content Filtering augmented with a more granular manageability.

These are the specs from the 586 and the features in bold are the ones you want to configure for security. The firewall by default is most likely running.

in your web browser just type in the following ips and see if one connects, I couldn't find the user manual for this router online

192.168.2.1
192.168.1.1

do either of these connect to the routers interface?
