Router/internet questions

So I have a Netgear N150 router that had some troubles. The wired and wireless connections for my roommate's xbox were disconnecting all the time, but the wireless on the laptops were fine. Call to Netgear required a $40 fee since it was out of warranty. (Could buy a new one with that...) so we called xbox. He got it working after an hour and a half and now the wired is working.

Here's my main question: Does wired connections in the router affect the wireless signal? It got me thinking that I could plug the ethernet cable coming from the modem into an ethernet switch, and just have one ethernet cable going to the router so the router would be only wireless connections. Then we could plug the xboxes into the remaining wired connections on the ethernet switch. Would I gain anything from this or not? Thanks.

As long as the router is in front of the switch you are fine. Anything is possible, if the router is overheating because of the network connections then I'm sure it could have something to do with the wireless going out.

Thanks, John. The router seems to be having more trouble with the xboxes, so I'll try this.

One other question, what's the maximum length a CAT5 cable can be before it experiences a decrease in speed?

325ft is the maximum length a cable can be. But as far how far it is before performance decreases... I have no idea. Unless thats the whole idea behind the 325 ft.
