router - modem

hi if anyone can help it will be very much appreciated, all suggestions are helpful.

I have recently set up a cable internet connection with virgin broadband. i have just purchased a wireless cable modem. With this modem i have connected it to the router virgin supplied via an ethernet cable i then connected the wireless router to my MAC. Now the connection works but i keep getting cut off every 5 minutes or so. But if i connect the router virgin supplied directly to the mac it works no problem, with no connection loss at all. The reason i use the Wirless router is because i also have a laptop in the house and a playstation 3.
so the problem seems to be the wireless modem.
Any thoughts or suggestions to solve this problem?
Many thanks Ryan

Are you able to have more then one computer connected wirelessly to the modem? Is the wireless router in the same location as the modem (so signal isn't a factor)? Is the wireless router you bought 802.11a/b/g or n, and what about the modem?

its an belkin wireless g router 802.11 g.
i have no idea about the modem as i am at work at the moment and the modem is at home. its the 1 virgin supplied and they said its ok to connect 2 another router as long as its a cable router.
i have not tried connecting more than 1 computer wirelessly only the ps3.
the modem and router are right next to each other.
thanks Ryan

So it's the PS3 that you connect directly to the modem correct? Is the PC that you are trying to connect to the router in the same room or about the same distance away? 802.11g has a certain range where it will work, it's not uncommon to have the router and modem in a room on the first floor, and not receive any signal in another room on the second floor.

the internet cable goes to the modem and from the modem there is an ethernet cable to the wireless router and from the wireless router is an ethernet cable into the MAC. The wireless router has 4 ethernet ports so i have connected the ps3 by ethernet also. i have also tried the ps3 wireless as it has wireless capabilities. but the same thing happens. internet keeps disconnected every 5 or so minutes when i use the router
everything is in the same room
