router question

Ok I decided I didn't want to spend a lot of money on this at first since I'm not sure how much I will use it so I bought this one on ebay: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002CWPR2/ref=nosim/slickdeals for $20 (he refunded me the shipping charges because it was his mistake)

I asked him if it works with cable modems and he said yes. I went to install it last night and it seemed straightforward but there is nothing connected to the cable modem and that confuses me and it I never got it to work. It went through the steps and asked if I wanted the dns numbers detected automatically I said yes and then it did some thinking and then the screen went white, no clue what happened? Does anyone know?

Well the first thing you need to do is connect it to your cable modem with a network cable. It will have a port on it that will probably belabelled WAN, that is where you want to connect it. Since it also has a 4-port switch built in there should be a group of 4 ports on the back and a 5th one not with the others. That 5th one is where you plug the modem in.

That's what I thought but there is nowhere to plug a cable into the back of the router?

It came with a network cable and I did as it said and plugged it from the router to the computer but there is nowhere to plub into my cable modem?

Well you know what,I'm not sure but there has to be an ethernet cable from the modem to the computer (it was late at night when I attempted this).

I know there was the actual cable from the modem to the wall but obviously something had to be connecting it to the computer. I'll take a look tonight.

Thanks, I've been nervous about trying all this so I kind of feel like an idiot:eek:

Ok, the cable modem does have a plug in the back so now what? I connect the network cable from the router to the modem?

I worked with that router (setting wireless in my friends house) that router... (to me) is horrible... I hate the setup, itsnot plug and play....

The DSL should be connected to the "INTELNET or DSL" port in the back of the router... Then connect another RJ-45 cord from the router to the computer. Wireless is another story...

Well after the second time going through the installation CD I got the router to work with no problem but I could never get the wireless to work. The signal was strong. I noticed in the settings there was no IP address but I can't figure out how to put it in there.
