Router setup help

Dell Dimension 8250, Win Xp pro, Linksys wrt54g router.

I need to set up the above router to my computer to use wirelessly with a printer where there is no internet.

I have seen this done before using a cable between the computer and router with wireless communication from router to printer. Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks.

The same way you use it when you have a cable from modem to router. You will still have local access to the router and the network, just no internet.

Dell Dimension 8250, Win Xp pro, Belkin N router, hp officejet 4622 printer.

First, a little background: I am attempting this setup at another location away from any internet. Up until 2 weeks ago, I was running this same computer/router/printer wireless with no internet. The computer was connected from onboard ethernet to router with ethernet cable.

Two weeks ago the hard drive died and I have installed a new one and loaded everything back on. Prior to the crash I was connected to onboard ethernet on computer. After I reinstalled Windows I could not get the onboard ethernet to find a driver (nor does it show up in network connections) so I finally installed an ethernet card and that worked fine on the internet at home.

This morning I went and connected everything. According to the diagnostic printout, the printer is connected to the router because the printout says the connection is successful.

I think my problem now is that the computer and router are not connecting. I plug the cable into the router and ethernet card and it continuously flashes "an internet cable is unplugged" (or something to that effect).

I do believe that if I can correct that, I might be in business. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

When you have the cable disconnected message then that means there is no cable attached to the lan port. Or its possible you have the cable attached to the onboard lan instead of the dedicated ethernet port.

As far as there being no internet connection in network connections then most likely the driver isn't installed. Do this. Go into device manager and right click on the device needing a driver and click on properties. Then click on the details tab, and give me the 4 digit vendor and device id numbers. They will look like this.

ven_xxxx dev_yyyy. Where x and y are 4 digit alphanumeric digits.

The computer is about 10 miles from where I am now. It will be tomorrow night before I can try to get your info. I’ll post back here when I return.

Meanwhile,
Here’s what I worked on today: (Your paragraph 1 above). I tried the cable in both the on board Ethernet port and the netgear card port several times with the same results. The difference I noted in the …cable unplugged…message it that it’s flashing instead of a steady display as this situation usually is.

(Paragraph 2 above): There is one internet connection (netgear card) in both the Network Connections folder and Device manager. There’s nothing showing for the onboard port. While I had the computer here at home with internet, I tried to find the driver for the onboard connection before I installed the netgear card…even went to dell’s drivers with the service tag but could not find what I needed. Since the one that I need the driver for does not show up, can I assume there no way to get the ven, dev number for you?

In device manager under network adapters (and also in Control Panel Network Connections) the only thing showing is the netgear card. There’s nothing else. In desperation, I went to device manager and uninstalled the driver for the netgear card and then let it find and reinstall the driver which is installed on the computer.

If you have anything more I should check when I get to the computer site, please advise.
Thanks

Yeah, I forgot to add that you need to check the bios and make sure the onboard lan controller didn't get disabled somehow. I've seen 2 computers do this automatically without any user intervention.

Sorry for the extended delay. I replaced the netgear ethernet card with a new one and that solved the problem with the “cable is unplugged” message. However, I still can’t get the printer to work wireless.

As I said before the diagnostic report that the printer printed out the first day shows everything good between the router and the printer. Suppose the problem now is with network settings?

I’m not sure exactly how to get to the settings to see if I can check them.

btw, I can’t see anything in the bios that looks like it would apply to a LAN setting.

OK. Use the printer install software to setup the printer using a wireless connection. You basically hook it up USB then it will transfer network settings to the printer and then you unplug the usb cable and it will work wireless.
