Router speed?

I am about to jump into the tricky world of sharing my internet connection, but I have a few questions.
How fast do I need my router and card to be? Is 54Mbs enough? or do I need faster? I will be sharing a 2Mb or possible 4Mb broadband connection.

Oh and will I see any lose in speed? or will a 2Mb connection be 1Mb fast on each computer?

Another thing is that I've read that becuase I have a broadband modem that connects to my computer via a USB that I will not be able to share my connection through a router? How true is this?

Thanks

Chris

It depends on how many computers are going to be connected thought your router, if its only a few, then 54MBps will be plenty. If you have a lot of computers going through, try getting an Extreme G pr Pre-N if you want wireless, however 100/1000 BaseT would be best.

You will only see a drop in speed if other computers are either playing a game, streaming music/video, or downloading not by normal web browsing (unless theres a few or more computers furfing the web). And your 2MB connection will go to whoever needs it, it doesnt split it up evenly between the computers, say if someone was downloading something, then they will get most of the bandwidth (speed).

Your modem should have an ethernet and a USB, the ethernet is what you plug your router into, however if your plugged in via USB, then you cannot transfer files between people on your router.

Hope this helped.

Being that you are using USB for your inter net, you don't need a router. Just get an ethernet cable and connect the second computer all while leaving the USB connected. It works I used to do it
