how i understand things, the difference between the two are a switch can not join two networks or share an internet connection. and if you have multiple hosts in a home setting without the use of a router, but you have a switch, you must assign one of the computers as the gateway. am i correct? i'm knid of new to the whole networking world.

You need a router before you can introduce a switch into the mix of things. The router allows your connected devices to share internet. Basically a router is nothing more than a 4 port switch.

A dedicated switch will allow you to share internet to more than 4 devices.
