don't you consider that maybe he has sharing or ftp or whatsoever installed on his ?
mine (office) stays on all time for the week since mine is an ftp at the same time.
mine sleeps when i'm in school or sleeping. Vista doesn't have hibernate that would more money.
FYI the difference is while in sleep your ram still does some stuff, in hibernate it doesnt.
I like sleep mode. It resumes and works perfectly, it took some tweaking to get it to function properly. I leave it on if I am downloading but that doesn't happen too often.
Only problem will be your hard drive and fans. I notice with mine, the fans collect a lot of dust. So I would say just be prepared to do a thorough cleaning every 6 months to a year. The hard drive will last less if your computer is constantly running, unless you power-down your drives. So, all in all I would say just to back up your stuff every week, and be ready to plop down $40 on a new hdd just in case. But this is also my take, you may never need to clean, and your hdd might be fine for however long you use it!
I will say that I never power down my drives or shut my computer off, unless I go on vacation for a week. Oh and I never back-up!
Yeah hd's are only rated for a certain amount of hours so that would be the only real concern and maybe power outages. By a cheap ups and a backup drive and you should be fine.
