Running two speakers systems on one computer, one 2.1 and one 5.1?

I have a Soundblaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Xtremegamer sound card and I'm running a Z-2300 and X-540 system at the same time. There is a 3.5mm splitter coming out of the green output on the sound card so both systems work at the same time. The X-540 is also plugged into the other two outputs of the sound card. However, to get the full benefit of the X-540 I have to set the sound card for 5.1 sound, but that muffles the Z-2300. Same when I set it for 2.1 sound, the X-540 is muffled.
Is there are way to mess with the settings and get great sound from both systems, or will I have to part with one or the other to get good sound?
 
NADA! The software for Creative as well as any other sound card will be geared for one set of speakers only! You adjust the speaker setting according to the ONE set of speakers plugged into the card. You are defeating the purpose trying two sets on one card and two cards or onboard for a second set won't work either.
 
i ran a 5.1 and a 2.0 from 1 onboard sound card once and it was fine. i think what your prob is having a splitter on the output. use a 7.1 sound card a connect they 5.1 as normal and connect the 2.1 into the other output port on your sound card. thats how i did it and it sounded fine.

Good point! mac550 A 5.1 won't while a 7.1 would! That sees that one additional output jack needed for the 2 1/2 set to be added on along with the 5.1. That also means replacing a working 5.1 for a 7.1 model card.
 
The Fatal1ty card should support 7.1, so just plug it in the the ports for the 2 extra speakers (which are side speakers I believe).
 
The X-FI Extreme Gamer sees 7.1 here. That's nowhere as high a price as seen on the Fatality models. You simply look at the product information once you have the ideal card for your price range in mind.
 
The Z-2300 has only one input, which is the green 3.5mm jack. The X-Fi has a green output, a black output, and a red/orange output, as well as a digital out that doesn't work with analog speakers. There is also an aux input/output. I'll try it with 7.1 mode and let you guys know later.
