Rusted palm rest

Laptop is in a great condition, except the rusted palm rest as shown in picture. Is there anything that can be done to refurbish this area? If it can be fixed, I prefer to fix it, otherwise purchase a new palm rest.

All it really is is the finish coming off. You could always sandpaper the rest of the finish off, or get a new palm rest.

Thanks for the tip. It would be my most preferred solution - to have the whole finish removed and leave it all white as seen on the bottom picture. Do you think sandpaper is all that's need to remove the whole finish?

i don't think i would use sandpaper. I would use 000 or 0000 steel wool. Might need some kind of spray also. glass cleaner or something. experiment in a conspicuous place. Think sandpaper would show small scratches. Maybe use also or try a little isopropyl alcohol. and thats a maybe.

It's just bare plastic underneath the shiny finish, and it's already started to come off, which is why I recommended sanding the rest of it off.

I wouldn't use steel wool unless the palm rest was removed first.
Using steel wool causes steel particles to float around in the air and I personally wouldn't want to risk any of that finding its way into my keyboard etc.
Maybe with a shop vac house right next to the steel wool as it is being used would be OK.
