S3 graphics cards

I've also tried to find a place to buy them before, just to see how good the high-end cards are. However, I get the impression that they're essentially a dead company. Their website supposedly also has a store, but it looks to possibly be insecure.

Never heard of them and their home page has news from 2010 and older and a banner about DX10.1, yeah, they almost definitely went out of business

Yeah their website looks like the company is dead, but then on the other hand there are people on youtube who own their cards and make gameplay videos using them. Isn't there a place where you can get a used one? I can't even find any on ebay...

I remember seeing them in integrated chipsets on via based boards but that's really all I encountered with S3 graphics.

I get the impression that the S3 540 GTX is actually a decent HTPC card, but it's hard for a company to sell a card to people when they don't actually sell the card. :P

My first Window PC was a DEC Venturis workstation from 1997. 133MHz Pentium proc, with a whopping 1MB of S3 Trio onboard graphics, expandable with impossible-to-find-in-2001 video RAM chips to 2MB. What a pig.

According to this, they releaased some drivers as late as late 2012. But I think that they have stopped manufacturing PC gpus, and are making GPUs for HTC.

The reason why would be just for fun. I wanted to have at least one graphics card that is not made by a mainstream manufacturer. Currently I own 6 graphics cards and I sort of collect them, because some of them serve no purpose (like my x1950xt, which is now ancient) and I keep them just for fun.

Same here. I still used my old Radeon x800XT up until last year, mainly because it glows blue. :P
