Safest chat portals

Hi,

I've read that some of the biggest chat portals put a number of spywares/viruses on the comp. when you install and use them. However, I haven't been able to find enough info on which are the safest with my Google search. Could you, please, name for me

1) the ones you know of which are safe (or relatively safe) from the most wide-spread ones,

and/or

2) mention the name of secure smaller sites you've heard of?

(General sites.) Thank you in advance!

Hello, Homenet! Yes, I used it for a few days in the past. Then you think IRC the 'best' large portal in this respect, don't you?

Well the thing with irc is that there is a channel for just about everything you could possibly think of! I think its easily the biggest community when it comes to chat, I think Efnet alone has around 60,000 users at a given time.

As for it being the best, well thats debatable ;) i think it depends what you want to use it for, if you want to chat on on a particular subject then yeh its great. having said that there are also just general chat channels aswell where anything goes.

You havent got to worry about any malware really unless you start accepting files from unknown users. Your public ip/hostname is freely available to anyone on the network however, and its debatable as to whether this is a security concern.

So to answer the original question I would say definatly say its the largest portal, and it can be the best depending on how you use it :)

what do you mean by safe?

if you download AIM, YIM, MSN etc from the offical site or legitimate source you should have a malware free software.

if you are talking about protocal security i think none of them are secure they are intercepted with a MITM.

Hello, Vizy; thanks for your suggestion.

Hi, Diroga!

Here’s what I’ve meant: About one, I’ve read it ’opens up’ one’s comp. to easy (hacker) attacks. Another plants dangerous and less dangerous ’objects’ in the machine. And recently I’ve learned yet about others that, in addition to making the PC vulnerable to hacking in many ways, with them there usually come viruses whose behaviour is often typical in a way that users will soon realize how common their problems are if they Google a bit and read about other users’ issues. All these ’entities’, of course, coming not with the installation, but during usage.

It is evaluations made by users of IM programs I’ve read that my previous post is mostly based on. It seems that anti-virus/anti-spyware softwares keep finding viruses/malware after IM progs have been used.

Anyway, thank you, Diroga, for your comments and intention to help.
