Same HDD, new system

I'm about to start building a new computer. I currently have a pre-built AMD system, but I'll be building an Intel set up.

Everything will be new except for my HDD. I planned on just transferring over the HDD, but I was told I will have problems and need to wipe it and re install my OS.

I've asked on /g/ but they weren't much help for a noob.

But if anyone could point me in the right directions for what I'll need to do, that would be awesome.

That's what I was afraid of. What's the easiest way to wipe a HDD? I've heard DBAN, but that looks like a long process.

Also. I have a windows 7 CD from a friend, am I able to re use my activation key that's on the sticker of my old case? Do they work together?

If you want a program to write over your hard drive many, many times, so no one can find information, then you'll want to use Dban.

But if you're still using the drive, just format it when you install windows through the CD.

And no, you'll need a new copy of windows.
