Samsung G2 - people can't hear me unless in speakerphone mode

I have a Samsung Galaxy 2 and when I'm speaking on the phone the other person can't hear me unless I turn on the speakerphone. Now, I figure this is not a hardware issue, since, I assume, the same microphone is used to pick up my voice whether the speakerphone mode is engaged or not.

Does anyone know what might be the issue?

Have you done a factory reset to see if that fixed it?

The Galaxy S2 is a 6 year old phone, it's well past it's expected life. You should look at upgrading.

Agreed! I have an S4 an its old and past its life expectancy.
