Saskatoon winter cooling? effective ??

How would this work for cooling:

If it's -40 (celsius & farenheit) and you put your case outside, would that provide the ultimate cooling system? Could I overclock like crazy in the winter time here? Do they rate computer hardware components to below -40 ??

Just a thought,
Mech.

Pretty sure it would work ok, at extremely low temps the semi conductors stop being semi conductors, but i think that i well well below -40. More like -400

Might have some hdd probs? not too sure. Wouldn't put the lcd display out side either.. Nor would i sit out there.

Mobo, ram, sound, graphics, psu, should all be fine at that temp- there not going to be -40 due to the ambient case temps.

You may have trouble getting acurate temps and not all boards support -ve temperature ranges.
try it, oh and post your results.

My very old computer didnt have a cpu fan or heatsink, so the only way i could use it was to have a window fan blowing into it, or have it outside. I used to use it on our porch in the winter, it worked fine although it was way too cold out there, and my fingers were freezing and i was barely able to type. I would think that some parts (Like the hard drive, Memory, and optical drives) might get damaged ot slow down, since they dont produce much heat. You can try it though, and get a program like SpeedFad to measure temps in your comp.

agree in theory on the hdd comment, but the ram should be fine. Optical drives are another unknown, but hey i would stick the box outside and run ide cables through the windows to keep the hdd and optics inside. Not probs then, and you should be able to squeeze some more out of your oc

In the winter my ambient room temp was -15 to -20C and it kept my box nice and cool :)

How do you plan on getting -400?
