SATA 3g HD HELP!

I'm currently running on window XP service package 2 and recently bought a 1tb hd but my computer doesn't seem to be able to use this hard drive. I asked the employees at frys they told me windows xp doesn't support sata unless i get drives and put it on a floopy disk and install the drives so i just decided to get windows 7 instead but when i install it with the new hard drive i get stuck at verifying DMI Pool Data... what am i doing wrong??

Is this an older XP system? Some of the original systems the bios would have to be updating in order to support the larger hard drives. Is this a custom built computer or store bought system?
