SATA and DOS

I have a simple and unfortunately newbie question. I will be building a new computer shortly. I expect to use a SATA HDD, and I want to know if I will be able to use Win98 in DOS mode on it. My wife has several old programs that she still likes to use that run best in DOS. (yes, I know about compatibility modes, and they just don't cut it with these 2 programs.) Currently I am using PATA drives. I have a dual boot system with WinXP and Win 98 that doesn't boot to the GUI, just to the C prompt.

So, if I use SATA drives and set the computer up the same way, will she be able to use the DOS programs as she has been doing all this time? I guess the question comes down to does the OS control SATA drives or does the MB?

And in the meantime, does anyone have a good MB/CPU combination they can recommend for me? I do almost no gaming. My computer is used for a home business, e-mail, internet, and for some minor photo/video editing. I will also likely upgrade to Win7 when I build the new computer.

Thanks for the help.

Most BIOS setups allows you to set the harddrive controller in either IDE or AHCI mode. In IDE/compatibility mode the software talks to the SATA drive as if it was an old PATA drive.
