sata and ide drive/ master,slave

I'm an admitted idiot with questions...

I bought a new MB and 120Gb sata drive amoung other things for a revamp of my comp. The current system has a 40gb IDE drive that my husband has almost filled with his music collection and I want to make the sata drive master with the ide as slave in the new system.

Is it as simple as setting the IDE drive to slave and using the IDE connect seperately from the sata drive? or do I have to buy an ide to sata adaptor and connect the two drives to each other before connecting them to the board?

thanks in advance

SATA has slave and master channels. ATA runs on it's own channel, so both can be set to master, you'll just want to make sure your boot.ini is configured properly

I have the same question.

I don't understand the answers though.

Your dealing with an idiot here---you just lost me. "boot.ini" ? Whaddyamean?

I know this might seam like Basic Computer 101 to most of you, but I don't have a clue what that (boot.ini) means. Are we talking boot priority in the bios?

Let's say I get it set up. With your help. I want to use the Maxtor 40GB IDE to save pictures and videos of my hobby stuff. Basically, use it as a storage drive. Does it need to have WIN XP Pro loaded onto it? Or just format it? What file system would I use to format it? NTFS?

I know I'll have to load XP Pro on my SATA 80GB Barracuda to use it as my primary drive.

I want to use the SATA for playing HL2 and CounterStrike, as well as surfing.

Okay, so I got it all set up. Now, I want to save a jpeg image to the 40GB IDE Maxtor drive. Is it just as simple as telling the comuter where to save the file? Or will I have to reboot into that IDE drive save the file?

Basically, you can have both drives in there and it will work. But you will need to change the boot order in the BIOS first.

So go into your BIOS (usually pressing F2 or DEL when you first turn the comp on). Then go to the boot order section, and change it so that the SATA drives is the first boot device, then you should be all set.

I got the new Seagate Barracuda 80gig SATA hard drive installed today.

I have to tell the computer which HD to boot up each time I restart, but thats not a big deal. It askes which drive you want to boot. I just toggle the arrow keys and hit the ENTER button to boot the drive I want.

I really cleaned up my rig today. I installed all round IDE cables for my CD-Rom and CD-RW. Round cable on the floppy. Round IDE on the 40gig IDE hard drive.

Installed a new 120mm exhaust fan in the back of the case. Installed 2 new 80mm fans in the front, to pull fresh air in and blow on the hard drives.

I added up all the fans today.
120mm exhaust case fan in the back
80mm intake case fan on the side door
2 x 80mm intake fans in the front
1 fan on the 7800GS video card
90mm Silent Fan on the Thermaltake Silent Tower
90mm homemade blow hole in the top that I made with a 3.25" hole saw. I slapped a little wire grate on it. Looks factory. Not much hot air coming out. I guess thats good.

Thats 7 fans in this mid tower case. Adding the newer 120mm exhaust fan in the back and the dual 80mm intake fans in the front dropped my CPU temp by 8C. I used to idle at 46C and I'm down to 38C now. :D

I got another Barracuda drive coming. I'm going to drop it in and remove the 40gig IDE drive for a different computer. I'll have dual 80gig Seagate SATA drives in my main rig. I use this rig for gaming, video editing, and surfing.

I'm putting the Maxtor 40gig IDE in a different computer for my wife. Then she'll have dual 40gig drives.

Rambling. Sorry. :o

Thanks for the help on the SATA installation. Works great. :D :D
