Hello friends. I got a hard disk from a friend, because my main disk has 50 GB capacity and i have like 10 Mb free. So turns out this hard disk is SATA, while my motherboard supprts ATA disks. I searched the net and i found that you can buy converters for the power cable, from your ata power cable to connect to the sata hard disk power jack. But what happens with the data cable? Is there a converter? Can i plug a SATA hard disk to an ATA motherbaord? I serahed it and all i could find was some IDE to SATA converters. these wont work, right? Please answer, i am in a tight situation, thanks

If you have an available PCI slot, you could get a PCI card with SATA ports on it.

Do you know how these cost?

Your best bet would be to find an IDE hard drive. Or you could try one of these, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

Sorry but i am confused. An IDE hadr drive connects to my motherboards ATA interface? DOnt you need an IDE interface? Sorry im noob. I cant buy anything else since i dont have any money, so i would like to work this out. The device you linked me will connect my SATA hard disk to my ATA motherboard? Because it says IDE. So IDE and ATA are similar? If this works i will buy it

Actually your motherboard ports are considered PATA/IDE, so yes, the part I linked to should work for you. But like i said before, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.

Here you go.

For about $5 more than the converter that may, or may not work, you could have a dedicated SATA controller card. You'll also need an adapter for your power supply though. One of these would suit you just fine.

Will it be as fast as a real SATA hard disk in a SATA motherboard? I will have to go with this, that why i ask . Thank you and everyone that posted answers
