SATA DVD Burner

I have an IDE dvd burner and a ide hard drive and my mobo only supports two ide devices, so thats maxed out. But I want another optical drive, so the criteria is it needs to be a SATA drive and then I figured why not get another DVD burner because it will be faster on a sata connection than an ide (right?). Any recommendations... I was looking at this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151141&Tpk=samsung+sata+dvd+burner
what do you guys think?
 
My understanding is that currently SATA Optical drives don't really offer much boost in performance over IDE. They do, however, clutter less case space due the smaller cable.

If I'm wrong on that and things have changed recently, please correct me.
 
Well either way I have to get a SATA drive because my IDE capacity is full... I was just kind of hoping that it was going to perform better so I'd use it as a my primary burner, but oh well... any advice on what to get? is that samsung a good burner?

Most people use SATA for their hard drives and use the IDE connection for the optical drives. The supposedly increased speed of the SATA is better for the hard drives anyway.
 
If SATA is the same price or cheaper than an IDE drive, go for it. Other wise it's a waste. There will be no benefits besides slightly better airflow and maybe easier configuration(no Master/Slave stuff)
 
The speeds are the same, but I bought SATA drives because I only have one IDE port, but like 8 SATA ports. But having SATA drives lets you burn data on both drives, unlike IDE which will cause issues.
 
Yea... the reason SATA is a requirement for my drive is I already on an IDE DVD burner and an IDE hard drive and my mobo only supports two devices on IDE connections... I was really just wondering if I'm going to see a performance boost in my DVD burner thats connected on SATA vs on IDE and advice on what to get. Thanks for your input
