SATA DVD DRIVE and IDE HARD DRIVE

Hi, my name is Joe from the Greek island of Crete. My 4 year old computer is supposed to have a Sata i found the hd is IDE.
I bought new Sata data and power cables and have powered the dvd drive up but the computer will not recognise the drive. I have connected it to a Sata connector on the motherboard but when checking the manual it only talks about connecting hard drives to the Sata connectors not dvd drives.
Am I going to have to buy a new IDe dvd drive or a new Sata hd??
I have gone into the BIOS and checked that the "onchip SATA" is enabled which it is...any ideas??

You should be perfectly fine running an optical drive via SATA. The issue may lie in the drivers, you say your computer is 4 years old so I can't say for sure what OS you are running (I'm guessing Windows XP). Did the SATA drive come with a CD?

What I would do is go to the Device Manager (Right click "My Computer" > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager). See if there are any devices with an "!" next to it, if so then the problem most likely lies in the drivers.

yeah, first update your drivers because your motherboard might not have came preinstalled with SATA drivers. make sure you go in your BIOS and enable any SATA options you see
