SATA II H.D. for a1100y HP PC ?

Hi all, newbie to the board posting here... I have a HP PC, model number
A1100y, spec's for the motherboard in it are at

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...25&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=1118244

And I was hoping to put a SATA II hard drive in it, product description for it is at

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...3r-_-Hard+Drives-_-Western+Digital-_-22136319

Basically it's a western digital 640 GB, interface SATA 3.0Gb/s hard drive.. I've tried searching for info on google about this , I've seen posts that say in the case of WD hard drives you don't have to worry about jumper settings or the like on the hard drive, you just plug in the hard drive and away you go .. the motherboard is ASUS PTGV-LA model, of course ASUS doesn't have any info on it at their website (sighs)...

From what I gathered during my google search right now current technology doesn't make full use of the 3.0 gb/s interface which is fine with me, apparently the price difference isn't that much between SATA and SATA II and I'd be transferring it into a newer PC one day when I get around to replacing my hp a1100y that will hopefully make full use of the sata II transfer speeds.

Sorry to be so long winded ! I guess my question is ... can I just input the WD SATA II hard drive I mentioned into my PC and go, without worrying about jumper settings or upgrading the bios or the like? Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated ! :)

Thanks so much to anyone reading this for your time and attention.

Yes, that shouldn't be a problem at all. All SATA drives are compatible with all motherboard that have SATA ports, and you shouldn't need to switch any jumpers.

Wow didn't think I'd get a reply this soon thanks so much ! :) I can see you've posted a LOT here PohTayToez, I'm sure there are a lot of people who appreciate all the time and attention you've given to them, as do I :) ... What confused me about the whole jumper thing was this post (my apologies for referencing another forum in here, sacrilege I'm sure :P but ... )

So safe to say the guys on the thread above are misinformed (the nforcershq thread that is) ?

There was an earlier thread on here (the computerforum.com that is) in the hard drive part of the forum titled "hard drive roundup" or something to that effect, mentioned a seagate sata HD as the best value ... thanks to that person too! ... the reason I picked the W.D. hard drive I mentioned earlier was this article:

http://compreviews.about.com/od/storage/tp/SATAHardDrives.htm

Item number five mentioned on there was listed as the "Best Sub-Terabyte Drive ", the WD hard drive I mentioned in my initial post.. just curious what does the rest of the forum community here think? Is it worthy of that distinction? I have no idea which hard drives are the best :P which is why I went searching on google to see what other people's opinions were ;) , which in turn led to the compreview link mentioned above...

I just ues Seagates or W/D. In Seagates I like the 7200.12 drives and W/D Black series are good drives. On seagates there is a jumper you set on the back on a Sata II drive to run in Sata I mode.

thanks strangehold ! :) ... Stupid me, I should have just checked the western digital website to begin with before bugging you guys.. duh ! (on my part that is ).. found this at WD's site

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc...t=sata+II+backwards+compatible&p_new_search=1

And topic 12 on there

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc...WNrd2FyZHMgY29tcGF0aWJsZQ!!&p_li=&p_topview=1

mentions that the WD hard drives are supposed to automatically set their speed in such a manner as to maintain backwards compatibility if need be... apparently there's a program you can download to adjust the speed too if need be, though it's no longer available for download for some odd reason from WD I just did a google search for WD lifeguard tools and saw a bunch of freeware places I can get it from if necessary.

So think I figured it out though if there's a flaw in my reasoning above someone please point it out to me ! (lol) .. even if I've got it right if anyone cares to confirm it that would be great since I'm the nervous paranoid type :P ...

I think your looking at EIDE drives there not SATA.

Other than the jumper setting on Seagates I showed you for SATA I speed.

W/D SATA II drives had a problem running on SATA I ports on some chipsets. They have a jumper you can set to for SATA I if you have a problem with it being detected. You put a jumper on the 2 pins that are second from the left.

Crap you're right ! I should have specified topic two on the WD site

Which is pretty much the same thing as what you said sure enough... thanks ! :) I just got confused with the earlier thread I mentioned on the other forum that said WD drives don't have a jumper ... and thanks very much for the diagrams very kind of you ! thanks again strangehold and pohtaotoez !
