SATA II HD Problem

I've just bout a second hand computer, for 400, good price i recon but anyways.

when i turn on my computer it starts to load, it recognises the hard drive but after it gets past the first 2 screens, it just comes up with a black screen with _ dashing
My friend recommended to just get a new one what should i do??

Hard Drive: SATA II Seagate 120gb

Did they claim it worked, By getting past the first two screens what does that mean, bios screens or windows boot screen

yeah he says it still works, the BIOS screens

Might have reformated it before he gave it to you, double check all your connections
