sata II on P5K ASUS

hey guys,
i just bought a new mobo (ASUS P5K) and being a bit of a nOOb i just set it to default thinking i'd go back in later, but now someone's told me if i didn't run AHCI my hdd's ain't running sata II, is this true? they do come up as IDE. now can i change this without a fresh install? i'm told the mobo drivers would have installed to suit the settings i chose at the start?
when i go into bios and try to change the config from IDE to AHCI it doesn't give me the option, IDE is all that comes up.
does that all make sense?
any ideas?:confused:
 
I'm not sure about the first question, but I believe AHCI vs ATA has nothing to do with it being in SATA II mode or not. However you can not change it without reinstall Windows if you are running XP (and you will need drivers), however if you use Vista you can change it in the BIOS and still boot up fine, although whenever I try to run it in AHCI mode my computer shows a blue screen.
 
apologies for the lack of response; the harder the question the less answers you get :)

Well the first thing to ask is "does my sataII drive have NCQ support". If not then there is no need to enable AHCI. There are other advantage to SATA II that you are already using.

Now if it does support NCQ then the setting should be in bios to enable AHCI...but it has to be done prior to installing windows. So you will need a fresh install after changing to AHCI. AND you will need to do an f6 installation and insert a disk with the correct HDD's AHCI driver which you should have got with the HDD - if not may be downloadable from the HDD manufacturers website

But on another note, what activities are you doing that you think NCQ will help you with?
 
It just allows the drive to accept multiple commands doesnt it and be more efficient and I think it makes it hot swap/plug. As far as i know it doesnt work with Sata optical drives?
 
ok, well i'm clearly in a bit over my head :D
i just figured that i wanted my drives running as sata II as it's sposed to be so much faster than ide, (even though i understand that sata and ide both run faster than your hdd's can spit info out)
however i was able to go in and change it over, it didn't want to boot at first but then it did and windows went through found new hardware, (ide this and controller that) and just ran the drivers on its own.
so can you guys tell me, i understood that it was all just a simple matter of sata running faster than ide, but after reading your replies i'm a bit confused :confused:
can anyone just give me a basic rundown on the difference between the two?
also, if i want to put my pc specs on my posts, do i just put them as a signature or is there a special thing to fill out?

Sorry, I didn't see this thread. Speed wise, they will run at SATA300 speeds if the drives interface and the boards controller suport it. The SATAII features only work if it's running AHCI mode (ie NCQ, hot swapping)
