sata optical drives

i just noticed that a shop near me stocks sata dvd-rw drives - first i've heard of them!

its probably a stupid question, but they are worth the extra $10, right?
 
For Extra Speed, Yes.

But personally, ive never needed any quicker than the 12x Speed im burning dvd's at...

There has been some issues with SATA burners. You will only get a little more speed out of the SATA burner. I just bought me a new 20x burner drive a couple weeks ago as i was contemplating buying SATA as well, but stayed with IDE.
 
I think right now the only real benefit of the SATA optical drives is the less obtrusive cable inside your case.

Incorrect. Most optical drives won't even go beyond ATA33, much less SATA speeds. As mentioned, you can use smaller cables, and you don't need to bother with Master/Slave settings. Otherwise, there's no real benefit.
